Wi-Fi vs Ethernet: how to get steadier streaming

Dropouts and buffering often come from the home connection rather than the service. A few adjustments make a big difference.

Prefer an Ethernet cable

A cable connects the device straight to the router and avoids interference. It’s the steadiest option for a TV or set-top box.

If you stay on Wi-Fi

  • Move the router closer or add a mesh Wi-Fi system;
  • use the 5 GHz band when the device is near the router;
  • don’t put the router in a closed cabinet or behind the TV;
  • restart the modem and router now and then.

What speed should you aim for?

Streaming services generally recommend about 5 Mbps for HD and about 25 Mbps for 4K, per screen watching at the same time. Run a speed test on the device itself, not just your phone.

Adjust picture quality

If playback stutters, lower the quality in the app settings. Steady HD is often nicer to watch than 4K that keeps pausing. See also our installation guides.
